Effective July 1, 2025, Iowa law requires reports of the following types to be made directly to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services: 1) Physical abuse of a student by a school staff member; 2) Sexual abuse of a student by a school staff member; 3) Prostitution of a child by a school staff member. Iowa law requires the subsequent investigation to be conducted by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (not the school district or private school). To report this type of abuse, call the Iowa HHS abuse hotline at (800) 362-2178. This hotline is available 24 hours per day. If a student is in imminent danger, call 911.
