Nurse Ashley came around to classrooms and shared with us a demonstration about germs. Students volunteered to participate in a germ activity by rubbing their hands with a special "germ" solution reactive to black light. After a few minutes, she went around the room exposing the glowing "germs" and explained how easily germs are transferred by contact with daily things like desks, computers and doorways. Students then practiced the prescribed hand washing routine and again using the black light, were able to see any "germs" they missed in the process. This was a great hands-on activity that was fun and educational. Thanks, Nurse Ashley!

Ms. Schmidt's Life Skills class prepared a Friends-Giving meal for R&R staff, as well as admin and support staff. Students prepared turkey, potatoes, ambrosia salad and green bean casserole to share. This was an excellent opportunity not only to learn cooking and collaboration skills, but to work on life skills such as greeting others, holding conversations and showing appreciation for those around us.

🍦 Mrs. Weiss's class had a fun time making homemade ice cream in a bag! With just some half and half, sugar, ice, and a lot of shaking, they turned simple ingredients into a delicious frozen treat. The students loved watching science in action—and eating the results even more!

Mr. Luebbers and Ms. Schmidt's classrooms created fun memories today during a buddy room Halloween party. The event began with a special reservation of Ghost Tag with Mrs. Williams in the gymnasium. Then everyone returned to the room for some monster coloring and special treats. Spending time together each month is a great way to build social skills and role model positive behaviors to friends.

🍂 LIED CENTER THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE 🍂

We're excited to partner with families to make a difference this holiday season!

When: October 21 - November 12, 2025
Where: Bring donations to the Lied Education Center
Who it helps: North East Iowa Food Bank of the Cedar Valley

Ms. Schmidt's Life Skills class enjoyed their first cooking endeavor. With a base of store-bought sauce, they added a variety of peppers, onions, and mushrooms which enabled them to learn a variety of chopping techniques in the process. In addition to the tasks of browning hamburger and preparing garlic bread, the class learned that watching a pot of water boil does indeed take forever. Delicious meal and great fun was enjoyed by all.
